Purchase Review

With new and updated material, particularly new Meta Model distinctions, this is the second edition of a work which has long been regarded as one of the best introductions to NLP. The Language of Communication model it introduces is a remarkable approach to the study of human communication and therapeutic change.

Good textbook and yet not for beginners

This book is written by Byron Lewis who studied under the founders of NLP and mentored by Frank Pucelick. Whilst it suggests that it is a good introduction to NLP for those starting on the journey, I think that to gain from it, there would be a need to have some understanding of psychology and perhaps neuroscience.

Whilst it took me time to get to the chapters on the Meta Model (which is enhanced by the addition of L Michael Hall’s categories) and the Visual Model, it was worth the struggle as I believe that these 2 chapters are a great resource for anyone new to NLP and who are looking for more concrete resources to improve their communication skills.

The book covered a number of the basic premises of NLP although, from a personal perspective, I found that it did not flow nor use language and acronyms that I could immediately grasp or recognise. I believe that there are better books in the marketplace that would provide a better stepping stone into the magic that is NLP.

A textbook rather than an introduction

As I am interested in NLP and yet have had no formal or informally training, a friend (who is an NLP Professional) asked me to read and review this book. These are my thoughts

After a somewhat laborious start, this densely-packed book introduces many concepts with relative ease. While marketed as appropriate for anyone interested in NLP, it felt more a textbook than a book that eases someone into an unknown topic. While the examples were clear, there was not the thread running between sections that might exist in a book with this broader audience in mind. Examples given in terms of practical application focused on the NLP coach/practitioner, rather than also on how it might be applied more generally. This is not surprising and yet it is probably a more specific audience than the author may have realised.

Despite this, I look forward to reading the second half where there seems to be more examples/illustrations. There is certainly plenty to be absorbed in this book
