Hypnotic Regression Therapy, or HRT, is a type of hypnotherapy in which, following the induction of a good trance state, specialised suggestions are given to guide the client in reviewing and emotionally reframing earlier experiences that have either caused or contributed to the client`s current symptoms.

HRT is considered one of the most valuable hypnotherapy techniques available today, yet it remains controversial, partly due to inadequate training of psychotherapists and hypnotherapists which has contributed to numerous cases of false memory syndrome.

In spite of the controversies, hypnotherapists successfully use regression therapy to discover the core causes of a number of problems and help clients release their emotional attachments to those causes. This volume removes the fear of the dangers of mishandled hypnotic regression by presenting an organised, client-centered approach. You will learn when and how to use HRT effectively to help clients discover and release the causes of their problems and symptoms.

The authors emphasise the importance of avoiding inappropriate leading and how to explain the risk of false memories to clients. They also clearly address the controversies about false memories and the handling of the emotional release that usually occurs during hypnotic regressions.

THE ART OF HYPNOTIC REGRESSION THERAPY – C ROY HUNTER

There are many great reviews for this work on line, (Amazon) however I struggled to write this review as I didn’t personally get a great deal from the new work. I feel there are many good books that include this in the overall coverage and wonder if there is a need for a book solely devoted to this topic.

Regression therapy is very specific, in Hunters own words people are unique, so breaking it down to a series of steps as a process for every client in my view fails to give enough account of those differences.

That said the volume is a clear and concise model of the process and gives plenty of background to the understanding of regression therapy, warning about misuse and misunderstanding and client preparation. Indeed half the book is of this nature and if you had studied hypnosis to any degree you might find this unnecessary and want to move quicker in to the application and following the steps and guidance.

This section is clear and comprehensive and worth the wait. It covers the process in plenty of detail, offering some great resources, suggestions and case studies, so has some good value here. There are a number of further specific topics covering unresolved grief and PTSD. At the end is a full transcript of a session. I would have like one or two more of these transcripts so I could get a sense of how different it is with different clients.

Not my favourite book, but definitely worth the read if you are looking to add or improve your understanding and techniques of regression therapy.
