The NLP Cookbook is a veritable smorgasbord of NLP and related techniques gleaned from some of the greatest names in the field and adapted to provide an encyclopaedic resource for all therapists, coaches, change agents or health professionals.

Fran Burgess uses the metaphor of cooking to describe the process of bringing together the best ingredients in NLP and selecting them carefully in order to produce some mouth watering results. The recipes are grouped into sections depending on their purpose. Quite a few focus on how to shift state, with some of these targeting specific states like acceptance and anxiety. These are followed by recipes that seek to develop behaviours and skills, and others that address beliefs and identity.

There is then a wide range to choose from which deal with goals, relationships and the process of change. The beauty is that most of them can be used time and again for different circumstances and contexts, so they never wear out. Each recipe is prefaced by an introduction, giving you some background to its source and evolution. You are provided with its ingredients, should you be interested in its engineering, plus timings and materials required, and if it is suitable for working solo, or with a partner. Novice cooks can follow the recipes slavishly whereas those with more experience can adapt a recipe, adding a little something here, removing a little something there. This is not magic. They understand the chemistry that underpins the cooking process. They know what happens when you put this with that, now or later.

Fun book with lots of creative ideas and ways to deliver some NLP exercises

The reason that I became attracted to this book was because of its interesting format as a cookery book. I very much like the idea of using the cooking metaphor because I can see similarities to NLP techniques. It is well presented and laid out with good visuals.

I believe that the style of a book helps the reader to establish the rules and 'norms' about how to use it and for me, the norm of a recipe book is for me is to flick through to find something that I like the look of. I found this to be the case with this NLP book, I spent a while flicking trying to choose the tastiest technique to read which I found to be distracting because I am generally a high options person.

The exercises in the book are very easy to understand and I like the 'one recipe per spread' format. There is just enough information for each technique for the experienced NLP user to understand what is happening and I thought that the exercises were presented in a fun and encouraging manner which left me feeling drawn into each one.

I found that many of the exercises in the book are based on perceptual positions / triple description techniques and involve the explorer participating in some physical movements, from station to station. I liked the fact that each exercise was given a skill level.

I would suggest that only experienced NLP folk, get a copy as a reminder that an NLP technique can be done in many ways especially if they want to try new ways to facilitate an exercise or to become a little more imaginative.

Annoyingly, the book is missing a key to describe who the technique is for 'E' for example.

Cleared My Plate

The NLP cookbook has some classic recipes re-worked and turned into some new tasty treats as well as completely new and intriguing recipes.

For starters, this book made me hungry for more from the outset. As a newly qualified practitioner, I am always keen to explore different teachings and techniques. Fran has provided a recipe book for the NLP intiate, the newly qualified practitioner and the experienced Master and Trainer, all in one.

The world of NLP is wondrous in its volume and richness of practice and interpretation. It’s probably true for all of us that we learn NLP techniques, models and processes which are subtly different from teacher to teacher. This difference really is the difference, therefore, you never really get the same meal twice. Once reading through The NLP Cookbook, I not only grasped the techniques but found them a joy to try. I was certainly hungry to learn more!

The interpretations of some of the Dilts techniques are inspiring and Fran has mixed these into new and exciting exercises. There are deconstructions of certain exercises, variations on a theme and I couldn’t wait to try some of these out.

The book is beautifully presented with some mouth-watering foodie pictures throughout; however, they do not detract from the joy of the recipes contained within.

Strangely, it left me equally sated and wanting for more – rare in any book!

Within the pages is a cornucopia of ideas, a larder of techniques and a pantry full of knowledge.

The only problem I found was that with the glorious food pictures on each and every page, it makes you hungry – as in physically needing food!

Reading this book and putting into practice the techniques has given me an incredibly happy meal for sure. Now, where did I put my second helping of cake?
