How do you encourage team learning and growth?
I would definitely add: + build psychological safety + growth mindset + celebrate calculated risk-taking (+efforts &struggles) + model & celebrate learning from what goes wrong + activate your own/others’ neuro-seeker systems (instead of fear systems) + “SMARTER” (vs SMART) where: S stands for Specifics (what extra specifics are needed for success?) M stands for Measures or Metrics of success (measurable is fine, but what are we actually going to measure & how?) A stands for Ambitious & Achievable (+ Agreed ideally). R stands for Role Relevance (for the person, the team & the business). T stands for Time-frames (deadline is crucial, but it’s useful also to include start point, checkpoints/milestones + task-time-estimate).

How can you encourage participants to share their perspectives without feeling judged?
The importance of contracting cannot be overstated…but I prefer to elicit those from the group, rather than impose them. Asking what people want to learn and then what behaviours in the group will help/enable/catalyse that learning…and what behaviours would inhibit or prevent the learning. It’s important to find a “do” as an antidote to each “don’t” and really important to enable the group to include the aims of honesty, compassion, support, non-judgment (Ie curious and caring), asking questions and sharing air-time reasonably equally. To enable people to be open and vulnerable, facilitators need to show their own vulnerability as well as encourage and praise others for doing the same.
