When life throws you unexpected curveballs (e.g major life changes) burnout can be almost immediate, as I discovered for myself and there can be no time to acknowledge the 'warning signals', so in these situations it is key that those around an individual are quick to step in and offer support, and the right support, so burnout doesn't happen, because the overwhelm will be almost instantaneous. Invariably teams, and managers do not respond fast enough to such situations happening to their team members, or their response is ill-fitting/thought through e.g. moving them to an 'easier role', when this is the only consistent thing in their lives, will upset the balance more, and increase the likelihood of burnout.

Sometimes it would be sufficient to bring the team together and revisit the overall tasks the team is undertaking, and how, collectively, they might be able to pull together to come to a collaborative solution, so the individual doesn't feel more isolated and alone, but supported by their colleagues in a way that won't exacerbate any concerns they have already about feeling like they are 'failing' at not being able to cope.

"Decreased performance, lack of enthusiasm, or increased cynicism among team members" is only part of the story, it is important to recognize when an individual is making themselves overly busy, not allowing themselves breaks, or indeed 'distant', they might still be performing or enthusiastic, but you notice moments when they appear 'distant' or 'distracted', it is likely their mind is being drawn elsewhere, and it might only be momentary, but it is a sign of impending burnout.
