Collaboration tools for every leader navigating change

Reviewing: The Collaborative Leader

Ian McDermott and Michael Hall are both well-known authors within the NLP community and although this book has been published since 2016 it still has much to say that is useful and pragmatic for leaders today.

Working across cultures and other department and function boundaries effectively remains a challenge for leaders, and perhaps even more now that we face the ambiguity and uncertainty that comes with decision making during the Covid pandemic.

As leaders, we are no longer afforded the luxury of drawn-out decision-making processes. This is a pragmatic and informative book on how to use the tools and skills of collaboration effectively to inspire others and achieve more than you thought possible. It provides a methodology for leaders to apply their learning and explores both sides of the coin so to speak.

The authors address the failed collaborative projects and the risks that can arise in collaborative working which provide insight and pitfalls to watch out for.

This book is educational and thought-provoking for any emerging or established leader who is facing complex changes and uncertainty working in collaborative environments.

A helpful introduction into using NLP in Consulting practice and what it means to be an Independent Consultant

Reviewing: Consult Yourself: The NLP Guide to Being a Management Consultant

Carol Harris’s book “Consult Yourself, The NLP Guide to being a Management Consultant” was first published in 2001. While some of the information in the book is somewhat dated as the world has changed significantly with regards to technology, and some of the organisations listed have changed or no longer exist.

However, this book does give you an insight into Management Consultancy and what it really takes to be an Independent Consultant beyond the actual work it explores the peripheral and yet important aspects of self motivation and work winning, and some of the pitfalls when exiting corporate culture and venturing on your own.

It’s easy to read, concise and clear in language. It provides a useful bibliography for each chapter. I would recommend it to anyone considering going into consultancy independently as a thinking tool to explore if you are suited to a career in Management Consultancy. The author draws you in to self analysis and gives lived experiences which broaden your thinking on the role and expectations you may have of Consulting, it’s rather insightful.

This book is great at highlighting how some key NLP tools and techniques can be used both professionally and personally which is hugely helpful if you want to apply your NLP skills in a corporate context.

A practical and hugely informative guide to self-hypnosis

Reviewing: Why Do I Keep Doing This!!?

Read this if you want to start making changes to your life today. From the moment I started reading, I found the writing easy to read, concise and well structured. I could read and assimilate information quite quickly (this is always great for my motivation levels). In Part 1 you explore the theory gaining a broad understanding of the development, the concepts and the applications of Hypnosis and NLP. This section alone makes a great handbook. Part 2 delivers what it promises. The application into real life. Packed with scripts and ideas to get you started, interspersed with some golden nuggets along the way, and always giving you choice to tailor the experience to yourself. As an NLP Trainer and coach, I found this book to be hugely informative, and surprisingly comprehensive. To accompany you on your journey there is a CD with a guide on how to make best use of the CD content followed by a guided session, for you the listener, to acquire the necessary familiarity of the hypnotic processes you learn in the book. This is highly recommended to get the best out of Section 2, however, if that is not for you it is not essential to get great value from this book. The author Dr. Judith E. Pearson, takes you on a deep and generative learning journey, her work is easy to read and understand and yet underpinned by a huge amount of research. It was written with the reader in mind however I cant help but get a sense of academic rigor that lies beneath every sentence. Read this book and you'll know how to change your life, one bad habit at a time.
