Wonderful words of wisdom

Reviewing: NLP at Work - The Difference that Makes the Difference

This book is a beautiful resource for anyone interested in learning or using NLP to improve their life. The content assumes no previous knowledge of NLP and is helpful for all levels, from the complete novice to Practitioner. Even Master Practitioners and Trainers can use the book as a reference resource. Because the book is written in a jargon-free way, you can easily follow along and understand NLP's essential and most important concepts and ideas. The clear and concise exercises enable the reader to apply NLP to their life in real-time and as they learn which means that they can get the results they want quicker.

Beyond the basic ideas, NLP at Work gives the reader an insight into where their beliefs, values and identity come from and how they behave. It explains how they can use NLP to model the excellent performances of natural experts and create new strategies to improve their own results. There is a good section on language usage and how we can drastically improve our communication skills by making subtle yet powerful changes to our language.

I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone with interest in NLP and I will certainly use it as a reference resource in my own business. Take action and grab your copy today!

Very useful handbook for coaches, managers & HR professionals

Reviewing: Performance Coaching

I feel that this book is a very good resource for new and experienced coaches alike. It provides clear guidance about how to conduct a coaching session covering topics such as being ethical and creating a safe and confidential space for the coachee to be able to open up and explore solutions without hindrance from the coach.

The book was easy to read and I particularly like the Linguistic Tips that are scattered throughout as these give further clarity on the topic being discussed in the book at the time.

The scripted dialogues in the book are useful because by following the conversation, I felt that I could easily replicate the structure and understand what was going on within the conversation. I found that I could quickly understand what was going on during the interactions.

There is a good section in the book relating to Meta-programs and personal preferences with a nice description of each one. I found this to be useful and I have used this book to help me to plan my NLP based coaching sessions.

Being an NLP trainer, I found myself being reminded of the references to some of the first founders of NLP and also, the models that are included in the book was excellent for revision.

For me, one of the biggest takeaways was the importance of listening to the coachee and paying close attention to the physiology that they are using because by doing this, you will be given a huge amount of information that you can use to help your client or coachee succeed.

I recommend this book to all coaches from beginner to expert.

Fun book with lots of creative ideas and ways to deliver some NLP exercises

Reviewing: The NLP Cookbook

The reason that I became attracted to this book was because of its interesting format as a cookery book. I very much like the idea of using the cooking metaphor because I can see similarities to NLP techniques. It is well presented and laid out with good visuals.

I believe that the style of a book helps the reader to establish the rules and 'norms' about how to use it and for me, the norm of a recipe book is for me is to flick through to find something that I like the look of. I found this to be the case with this NLP book, I spent a while flicking trying to choose the tastiest technique to read which I found to be distracting because I am generally a high options person.

The exercises in the book are very easy to understand and I like the 'one recipe per spread' format. There is just enough information for each technique for the experienced NLP user to understand what is happening and I thought that the exercises were presented in a fun and encouraging manner which left me feeling drawn into each one.

I found that many of the exercises in the book are based on perceptual positions / triple description techniques and involve the explorer participating in some physical movements, from station to station. I liked the fact that each exercise was given a skill level.

I would suggest that only experienced NLP folk, get a copy as a reminder that an NLP technique can be done in many ways especially if they want to try new ways to facilitate an exercise or to become a little more imaginative.

Annoyingly, the book is missing a key to describe who the technique is for 'E' for example.

Complete package

Reviewing: Weight, Hypnotherapy and YOU Weight Reduction Program

This is a very interesting, well structured and organised book. It gives the reader a very good and detailed plan of how to implement a weight-reduction programme within their business. The first few chapters are the explanatory preamble to the actual therapy sessions.

There are 8 sessions in the book and they follow a logical progression so that the client is on a solid track to reduce their weight by completing the programme and each one explains exactly what to do and even highlights the processes required to complete the session.

The client sessions are:
Session 1: Intake interview and introduction
Session 2: Reframing compulsive eating
Session 3: Training in self-hypnosis
Session 4: Stopping emotional eating with stress management
Session 5: Making sensible food choices
Session 6: Creating an intelligent relationship with food
Session 7: Boosting motivation to exercise
Session 8: Pulling it all together for lasting results.

I was very impressed that a pricing structure was included, specifically that it is sold as a programme of 8 sessions and not 'pay-as-you-go'.
The author says that the whole fee should be paid prior to even starting the programme and there are no refunds or concessions to be applied.
She points out that the pricing structure is designed to achieve several things, it weeds out those that are looking for a quick fix and those that are not serious about reducing their weight. It also holds the client accountable and they must reach specific goals and targets before continuing.

To complete this book, there are many different scripts and templates that can be easily adapted for your own specific requirements.
I can't wait to implement a weight reduction programme in my business and model the structure across to other programmes in the future (Smoking Cessation, for example)

Fabulous book - Recommended!

Very useful NLP change pattern resource

Reviewing: Sourcebook of Magic: A Comprehensive Guide to NLP Change Patterns

I found this book to be an extremely useful resource and reference book. It contains a very good detailed history of NLP, although it excludes Frank Pucelik, and provides the original NLP Presuppositions.

The main purpose of this book is to provide a detailed description of the concept and process of 77 NLP Patterns for change work.
If you are working with clients or students and want to remind yourself how a specific NLP pattern is used or what the idea behind it is; then this book is invaluable.

I specifically enjoyed the concepts of each pattern because it is here, in the concepts that you get a good handle of exactly what the pattern does. I found the pattern descriptions to be quite prescriptive and they are laid out in easy to follow steps which help to prevent confusion.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone that is working with clients for change work using NLP. I would suggest that it is a must-have for Master Practitioners and Trainers.

I would not recommend this book to anyone starting to learn NLP; this is not a "My first NLP" type book because it is not written as a tutorial and instead more like a reference manual which you can use to refresh your knowledge of a specific pattern.

By studying this book, you can enhance your toolkit further and increase the options of patterns that you can use in any situation.
Personally, I believe that having several patterns is a good idea because some clients will understand one pattern better than another one.

As a trainer, I have included some of these patterns into my courses because they are useful, easy to follow and make good exercises.

Very interesting new layer for improving communication quality

Reviewing: Clean Language: Revealing Metaphors and Opening Minds

This book adds a new and interesting layer for improving my communication skills by highlighting the importance of listening closely to the client and being more present and attentive during interactions. It is easy to read and the examples given make sense in the real world. I was surprised at how simple the overall concept of Clean Language is and I believe that with regular practise, it will assist to make my conversations more effective.

Clean language is all about making the most out of the client's own situation without 'polluting' it with your own advice, opinions or ideas whenever possible. By listening and paying close attention and by using the clean language questions with metaphor, crafted from the client's experience, we can get more information out of the client because they may feel that they're being listened to, understood, and may open up more due to the increased rapport.

Metaphor is discussed a considerable amount throughout the book, the difference I found with this book's take on metaphor compared to my previous thoughts was that the most powerful metaphors can be crafted from the direct experiences of the client. You do not need to have loads of pre-made generic metaphors because the client brings what is relevant to them and their context is much more impactive and important to them than anything that can be bought from outside of their experiences.

By using clean language, we can encourage the client to expand and immerse themselves into their experiences because we can use clean language questions to get more information which can be built into the transformational metaphor which can only aid the client to make the changes that they want or need to make to achieve their outcome.
