How can you help your mentee develop negotiation and conflict resolution skills to create win-win solutions?
Finding win-win is a mindset issue first and a strategy issue second... Many negotiations are entered into with the attitude of I need to get more. When we flip that over and start by asking ourselves what can I give that will be high value to the other party, so I can create a win for them, then we put ourselves in a strong position to ask for something of value in return. This often requires patience, resilience and the desire to really understand the other party's circumstances and values.

How can you balance short-term wins with long-term sustainability during a change initiative?
How the objectives of the project are defined, communicated and managed is critical. The team must buy into the importance of both short-term wins and long-term sustainability. The key to this is dovetailing the objectives, vision and values of the project with the personal objectives, vision and values for each team member. If the team culture doesn't support this the project will suffer. Build a team culture that enables this to happen not just top down, but also amongst peers.

What are the most important resources to prioritize for innovation and growth in your company?
Always start by looking at the human resources and especially business culture. Innovation is happening all the time. However, a poorly aligned business culture can misdirect creative efforts and problem-solving to non-productive thinking. At an individual level that might mean being focused on protecting one's role, status, personal preferences, or even sabotaging other's efforts. When the business purpose, vision, values, mission and beliefs are all clearly defined, communicated and embedded in business processes (e.g. recruitment, promotions, incentives, targets) then conflicts and internal politics disappear and team members have headspace for aligned creative effort. Everybody wins and other resources can now be used to full effect.

How can you resolve conflicts with customers and partners to build stronger relationships?
Resolving conflict well is one of the best ways to create strong allies and advocates. To do this well, I can't over-emphasise the importance of step 1 in this article - understanding the source of the conflict... You want to really 'get it' from their perspective. You'll know when you have nailed this because you will feel the emotions the other party is feeling. Then you are armed with the information needed to move to step 2 in this article. Good luck!
