When Peter Falk was asked how he would feel if he’d committed a crime and was being pursued by Detective Columbo, he replied it would feel like being pecked to death by a duck. This image of slow and steady pecking eventually wearing down the victim into submission is a scene I often see in the schools I visit. The relentless pressure and cycle of assessment and exams dizzies both teachers and students, and can throw them into the role of pecked victims....
