The Growing Influence of AI

The ANLP Accredited Trainer and Trainer Community Café discussions continue to produce thought-provoking, inspirational and instructional discussions… all with the current and future of NLP at it’s heart…

A recent discussion quickly went deep with the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in developing courses and the ethics of ChatGPT being used to answer test/exam questions.  The point was quicky made that ‘A really clever set of algorithms’ (ChatGPT and similar generative pieces of software) is NOT AI (in the view of most of the attendees.)

It was explained that ChatGPT (other pieces of software are available!) is constantly trawling the available internet to gather data with which to create answers to the questions that are posed.  This is the same thing that humans do, and we call it experience.  ChatGPT does have, what its creators term, a morality filter, however many people can find a way around this…  And it’s the same with human beings too. 

Answering NLP course assessment questions using ChatGPT produces some interesting and reasonably accurate results.  Is this OK?  Can you ‘interview’ the student to check their knowledge to make sure they know the subject matter in more detail?  Will an Assessor have the time to do this with a large cohort of students?  What are other uses of AI that can enhance what we do in our field?

The consensus was that the acceleration of the accumulation of data for these ‘clever sets of algorithms’ means that ‘it’ (AI and these other tools) will begin to play an increasing part in our lives.  Again, the consensus was that we need to embrace the movement of technology and explore it so that we can adapt and flex to continue to grow ourselves and our businesses.
