I usually explain the use of metaphors to myself and to others as follows. We cannot understand all the processes of the mind; the generation of enzymes, moving white blood cells and antibodies, the electrical impulses in the nerves and so on. But we can make images which relate to any of these processes in a way that we do understand. Just as we do not need to understand the processes at the power station, the resistance of the cables, the proportion of electrical power available to us - we just turn the lights or TV on.
