When I was a self-conscious teenager, I used to be mortified each time I got lost. If I stepped out of a building and started walking down the wrong street, I’d create a detour for myself rather than simply laughing (silently, inside my head) and pivoting. I’d pretend I needed to pop into a nearby building and then take the direction I’d intended (assuming I didn’t get lost again) when leaving it. As if anyone cared about where I was going or what I was doing.
