During ‘unprecedented’ times, the world can seem more volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA). The question for this article is: what do effective leaders do during VUCA times? The year 2020 tested the mettle of many leaders. My focus is on organisational leaders, though other leaders (e.g. political) may also find this particularly relevant. To lead implies people (whereas to manage implies resources). During the coronavirus pandemic, not only are leaders dealing with the environmental factors, but also with their people’s (and their own) emotional reactions.
