Thirty years ago I didn't believe in generalizations about national characteristics. I can remember arguing with travel companions that the French were not “this” and the Germans were not “that”. My belief then seemed to be that all nationalities were a wide and varied collection of individuals who, amongst other human talents, would surely have my natural ability to understand English as long as it was delivered slowly and loudly enough....
