Unlocking project communication using the power of language – The NLP Communication Model

Tim Lyons, a member of both ANLP and the Association for Project Management (APM) Specific Interest Group for the People (PSIG) approached ANLP about setting up a joint event to build on a previous successful collaboration.  The opportunity also allows the exposure of ANLP members to the chartered body that governs project management within the UK.

The project environment relies very heavily on communication.  There are many standard formats used, and a few channels to consider.  It is worth examining how aspects of the NLP Communications Model are being used, deliberately or unconsciously; also it is worth considering how deletions, distortions and generalisations can be challenged, in the interests of better communication and decision making.

A webinar on The Communication Model has been set up for the 13th April 2023 from 12:30 – 13:30 BST, with an invited audience, and the use of graphics, on-screen material, voice, interview and with experts in the subject matter drawn from the ANLP’s professional members.

Detailed focus points that could be developed as sessions with, say a webinar might include:

  • A selection of typical project communications, written and verbal
  • An introduction to Deletions, Distortions and Generalisation
  • How these may be challenged in a generative way
  • Some examples, case studies where better understanding of the Communications Model led to better outcomes

Experts within ANLP who have experience of unpacking and deploying the Communications Model are asked to contact APM, if interested in being part of this initiative.  Tim, as someone who spans both NLP and project approaches, can help to map the NLP thinking into the APM thinking as required.

The webinar will be a session-based ‘interview-style’ of elicitation, with audience participation.  For this session APM might invite audience members to bring along sanitised examples from their own project environment – this would allow the expert team to suggest alternative syntaxes that would allow a more meaningful message.

APM would like to hear from you if you have expertise in this topic and feel you could add value to this discussion as one of the panel members.   Please send an email to Tim Lyons [email protected] giving a brief overview of your experience and your enthusiasm for this subject matter!

Deadline: 21st February 2023
