GHOTI Rapport Archive Education GHOTI Rapport Issue 42 Publication Date December 28th 2014 Authors Nancy Walbank In the 1970s Robert Dilts recognised that accurate spelling could be modelled, as people who spell well naturally use visualisation techniques. These techniques can be taught to people who find spelling difficult who are often using less helpful spelling techniques, such as phonics. Phonics is useful for working out how to pronounce a word. Visualisation is useful for remembering how to spell a whole word. When using lower case letters, each word has its own shape, a bit like a jigsaw puzzle piece. Often when people spell a word wrong they comment that, ‘it just doesn’t look right’....
